Ag Buildings FAQ

Generally speaking, it will not matter as long as the building is below 80’ wide. Square footage will determine the price. 80’ and wider can increase the cost incrementally because of the increased pressure on trusses.
This will depend heavily on the building usage. Slide doors are economically friendly and work well for large implements in cold-storage settings. They are never recommended for climate-controlled structures/sections. Overhead is great for small-to-medium sized doors whether climate controlled or not. They are reasonably economical, easy to get service if there’s a problem, universal, and seal the building well. Single-fold doors are great for very large purposes. They will generally seal well in climate-controlled situations.  Up-front cost will be higher. Single-fold doors are commonly referred to as “hydraulic doors” because most are hydraulically powered, however they can be mechanically powered as well. Some refer to them as “awning-style” doors. Bi-Fold doors are similar to single-fold but rather than one hinge-point at the top of the door a bi-fold hinges at the center. Bi-folds are also great for large opening needs. Pros and cons of single-fold vs. bi-fold are often owner preference driven and requires more research to answer.

Animal confinement or fertilizer storage can be highly corrosive and detrimental to a building and the harmful effects can be rapid and dangerous! Utilization of stainless steel fasteners and gusset plates is highly recommended in many cases. Use of Drip-Stop material adhered to the back side of roofing and/or siding panels has also proven to be an effective method to protect against corrosion. Proper selection of siding/roofing metal substrate is critical. For instance galvalume substrates which are all too common on must metal buildings today are usually not recommended in these applications. This topic bears significant research and decision making.
